Dictionary definition (courtesy of google) Bold - an adjective meaning a person, action or idea showing a willingness to take risks; confident and courageous. Synonyms include: intrepid, courageous, brave, unafraid, undaunted.

My interpretation - To be bold is to carry out an action that may be perceived as an intrepid exploit and you felt confident and unafraid to do it...... really?

This reflection over what the meaning of the word 'bold', is key to understanding how I made my step to #BeBoldForChange

Today, I am about to submit my application for a deputy head of sixth form role - a job and role I've wanted for many years. A step that some may perceive as bold, but l most certainly wouldn't describe myself as unafraid or 100% confident in taking.

Women are usually the gender described as nurturing, caring and emotional. That last word can be seen as damning and sexist when used to suggest we do not fit the mould, image and/or ideal of what a leader should look like. I know that I have often thought emotional sensitivity is a hinderance and a negative trait, but I've come to the realisation that it's one of the most powerful tools I have in my skill set - typically unique to womanhood.

As teachers, "the membrane between personal and professional is exceptionally thin." These words were the wake up call, the final piece of the puzzle which revealed the power behind embracing my emotions and intuitiveness to others into the leadership job that I want to do.

When I look at the majority of leaders, there appears to be an 'armour' creating distance between you and them. This makes it hard to understand, through simple observation, what it takes to get to that position - especially the emotional strength required to achieve and be successful in a leadership position. By suppressing and ignoring emotions such as feelings of being afraid, daunted or lacking bravery - we dehumanised and defeminise and remove the slant that only we as woman can bring to any role we undertake.

I don't think you can be bold without acknowledging the emotions you feel around what you do. Right now, I'm nervously excited to see where my application for this next step takes me - albeit it an intrepid exploit, it's one I'm very daunted by but I take comfort in the action I've taken which was pretty darn brave!

My message to you....

Don't allow the negative voices - inward and outward - stop your brave actions, let your brave actions silence them!

Youlande, from the first day I met you and heard about your teaching journey I knew you would do amazing things. I understand your reservations with the dictionary definition of bold, I believe taking action in spite of our fears would be a better definition and this is just what you have done. I can't wait to see what the future hold for you has you continue to take bold steps.

@youlandebiosah WOW! What a courageous lady you are. So many of us have who blogged today have recognised that our emotions and intuitiveness are our strengths. Being emotional or shedding a tear doesn't equate to being weak or lacking in resilience. Good luck with the application! x

Good luck with the application. The idea of being a school leader wearing armour to mask emotions is quite terrifying. Authenticity is the way to go and show your full leadership portfolio

I think you will make a great deputy head of sixth form/head of sixth form in due course, Youlande, if that's what you choose to do. And for the record, during my time as head of sixth my capacity to empathise, my sensitivity and my emotional intelligence definitely make me better at my job!

Very best wishes.

So true Youlande, I was encouraged to lock my emotions away as a middle leader & be a robot, I was surrounded by men who saw my softer side as a weakness. I stayed true to my authentic self, with my staff & my students I have always been honest, candid, transparent & spoken about my emotions, to model to them. Our emotions empower us, as @vivg said I aspire to be a Super Heart & not a Super Head. Best of luck with the application - looking forward to hearing more this week! X

What an inspiration you are. It's so true though, isn't it?! Without emotions, what's left? Certainly not passion - and who wants to follow a leader without that? Good luck on the journey ahead!

@hannahtyremancpd our job should be fuelled by passion so why do we fear the acknowledgement of our emotions at times! Thank you for the luck and I'll be updating you all next week.
